Hi, my name is Hollis Hickerson
they/she
I am a queer multidisciplinary artist working in fiber and illustration, practices that, while different in process, are united by common themes of transformation, perception and identity. My fiber practice is rooted in felting, a process that transforms raw wool through various kinds of agitation. Creating soft sculptures, I explore how our identities are shaped by personal and collective experiences, social constructs, perception, and connection. My illustration practice expands on that using narrative imagery to depict original folklore, hybridity, and identity, often blending the playful and the macabre to illuminate the complexities of belonging.
Teaching and working collaboratively are inseparable from my artistic practice. Over the past decade, I have developed workshops across New England working with students of all ages and backgrounds. These programs emphasize hands-on experimentation in fiber, printmaking, papermaking, and bookbinding, with an emphasis on accessibility and sustainability. I believe that when participants engage directly with materials the act of creating becomes a form of empowerment: a reminder that art is a tool available to everyone.
